UK jobless rate hits multi-decade low

Mubasher: The UK labour market continued to create jobs, as the number of working people rose in the second quarter of 2019, according to the Labour Force Survey.

The number of employed people across the UK rose by 179,000 to a total of 32.777 million people in the period between May and July, from the prior three-month period.

Compared with the previous year, the number climbed by 369,000, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) stated on Tuesday.

“This has not been lower since October to December 1974,” the ONS said.

The average weekly earnings, excluding and including bonuses, grew to 4% and 3.8% year-on-year respectively, on a nominal basis, which is not adjusted for price inflation.

In real terms, the average weekly earnings went up by 2.1% from a year ago, less bonuses and 1.9%, including bonuses.

By 8:43 am GMT, the GBP/USD pair went down by 0.08% to $1.2336, while the EUR/GBP pair inched up by 0.03% to GBP 0.8951.
